to give us more in the way of 70s at the beaches, lots of 80s and a few more mid-90s. i'll go over that complete forecast city by city in a few moments. diane. >>> with the warm weather hundreds of people are spending their labor day weekend at the beach, of course, despite the fact there's been two recent sightings the great white sharks along the bay area coast. we're in pacifica with a look at whether the shark sightings are unusual for this time of year. >> reporter: experts say this is the time of year that sharks are actively feeding along the northern california coast. they also admit that there have been more sightings than usual of great white sharks this summer. that said, just take a look. you can see that does not keep surfers or swimmers out of the water here at linda mar beach. warning signs are no long posted here indicating there was a sighting of a great white shark last week attacking a sea lion, but many people are aware of the incident. we talked to a shark expert in san francisco. the expert today us it's not uncommon to see all varieties of sharks along want c

morning to you. the idea is that you can pay up if you want to get there faster. solo drivers can use the express lane and this is for carpoolers. now if you are a solo driver and you are tired of sitting in traffic, maybe a little bit late, you can decide whether the cost is worth it to you. this runs on southbound 680 from pleasanton to milpitas. there three entry points and we will tell you the price. from 30 cents to $6. you pay using your fast track tran responder. this is new for the area and a spokesman said he knows there will be a learning curve. >> this is new for northern california. it will take time for people to understand how it works. during that process, people get it fast. mostly it's the same people driving. they will learn it and it's a great thing for bay area commuters. >> the chp is ready with extra enforcement as well. solo drivers would get ticketed if they are in the carpool lane. they are using their own tran responder reader to make sure that the solo droifrs are legitimately in the lane. if not, if you are caught doing it, the usual rules apply and the tic

. some of us will see a cool down, but in the east bay that's not going to happen. 96 degrees at noon and 96 in livermore and 95 in concord and 90 in fremont. the forecast highs, we will see a sea breeze, but inland it's going to be another hot day. 102 in fairfield and 105 in livermore and 102 in concord. we should see a cool down and thankfully it is coming sooner rather than later. i couldn't turn down the heat too much. >> it would be a good day to spare the air, but you don't want to ride your bike in the heat. >> we want to find alternate transportation, but lower the activity because of the air quality. we will focus on the people who are stuck. you have a van that got sideways. no injuries reported. one lane is blocked as you head through oakland. westbound is the morning commute that takes effect in about a half hour. looking nice right now and eastbound we have the construction in towards livermore out of pleasanton. no major slowing and 680 we will see the slowing over towards the express lane. even though it approaches, you have seen clear traffic south of the entrance. >>

. the assistant curator at the aquarium of the bay in san francisco told us shark sightings are common in the bay area this time of year. in fact, the large seven-gill shark on display at the aquarium was caught last month near alcatraz. but he says shark attacks on humans are rare. >> obviously, there have been documented cases of shark attacks. but again, at the same time there are also statistics that will say you're more likely to be struck by lightning than you are to be, you know, bitten by a shark. >> reporter: experts also say many varieties of sharks visit the northern california coast. particularly between august and december. >> it's not uncommon for them to come into the bay, particularly right underneath the golden gate bridge into the mouth of the bay. they will come in there to feed off sea lions. >> reporter: and experts admit there have been more sightings of great white sharks this summer than usual. they say that should be a reminder to anyone who goes into the water this labor day weekend to be careful. live in pacifica tonight, monte francis, nbc bay area news. >> all right.

in santa rosa. at noon the warm upstarts. most of us reaching the 70s. the city will be at 87. at 4:00, a bit breezy and that's the sea breeze for the inland areas. coming up, a hot weekend forecast. possibly seeing triple-digit temperatures. >> getting warm out there. new this morning, it's a tense morning for families forced out by a new gas leak. this comes on the two-week anniversary of the san bruno explosion. christie smith is live in orinda with what's going on out there this morning. christie? >> good morning. i have new information for you. i just got off the phone with the city manager who is on scene and told me that pg&e capped the gas leak. natural gas is not leaking anymore in the downtown area. it's still not a clear scene. here's what we know. it was about 11:15 last night and an outside contractor was work on a paving project near mo raga way and a back hoe hit a gas line. there were reports that this was a six-inch gas line and neighbors in about a dozen homes were evacuated, but it was actually a two-inch gas line. people were allowed back home quickly. for now, n

towards the grade. we are following something you have for us new this morning. >> solo drivers new this morning on 680. we will have the option of hopping into the carpool lane if they are willing to pay for the privilege. headed southbound for about 14 miles between pleasant ton 1k3 milpitas. kristi smith with how this new change and new lane will change your commute. >> good morning. this will definitely move your commute along. you want to get ready and if you want to use it, you have to pay up. estimates are from 30 cents to $6. the lanes are operating at about 5:00 this morning. in about 30 minutes. this is the first of its kind. it has been functioning in southern california for quite a while and other parts of the country. the existing carpool lane is converted with new stripes that detail specific entry and exit points. you pay with your fast track tag and this is electronic. there no toll booths or a need to slow down. the average toll is expected to be about $4 to $6. the price would tell you how much it would be to mission street or all the way down. regular koor poolers

weekend for you. those of us who live here, with he know that sunshine, even at the beaches, we will have 70s there. as we look out over the south end of the bay, nice start to the day over san jose. the temperatures have been in the 60s for most locations. a couple of 50s in the north end of the bay. mid-50s if that. these numbers are going to quickly rebound and jump up. we have a big ridge of high pressure settling over the bay area, most of the western half of the u.s., from washington down through san diego. there will be a little bit of cooling along. tomorrow's storm, the tail end of it, passes the bay area. all it is going to do is keep us right about where we are today. sunday, very similar to saturday. maybe we will drop into the 60s at the beaches. we will continue with more of the 90s in some of the warmer spots. monday, those 90s you see there will be closer to 100 degrees in some of the warmer spots. concord over to say livermore, you have got a good chance of reaching 100 degrees. we will get those at palm springs and in through the central san joaquin valley. look at san l
